The districts of Münster

Münster is more than just the historic old town. Around this city center are large and small districts. These are divided into a total of five municipalities: North, East, West, South-East and Hiltrup. The inner city around the old town is the sixth municipality of Münster-Mitte. The districts of the outer municipalities consist of formerly independent communities that were incorporated into Münster over time.
Sixteen districts are presented in more detail below:

The current townscape of Coerde is completely planned. However, the district and its history are much older.

Münster's largest district, which was originally a home for the sick outside the city gates.

The northernmost district of Münster is beautifully situated in the countryside and has a lively club life.
Districts in the municipality "East"

Gelmer is located on the Dortmund-Ems Canal and the Werse River, thus water plays a role here for trade and recreation. In addition, asparagus is grown in the district.

Due to its location on the Werse River, Handorf is a popular destination for excursions. There are many coffee houses here, which gave the district the nickname "village of the big coffee pots".

For a very long time this district was agricultural and its name is said to originate from a legend about drunkenness.

Originally a small farming community that owes its name to the nearby stream. Today, Gievenbeck has over 20,000 inhabitants.

Due to its location between railroad lines and motorways, Mecklenbeck got the name "the divided district". Through the initiative of its citizens, however, it has grown together.

The district offers a varied cultural program with concerts, musicals, exhibitions, readings and much more. Also worth seeing is the well-known Haus Rüschhaus.

The name of the district comes from a family name. It started as a center of settlements and farms, which makes it agricultural until today.
Districts in the municipality "Southeast"

Several rivers meet at Angelmodde, including the Angel, which gave the district its name. In its history, it has been the fastest growing municipality in North Rhine-Westphalia.

One of Münster's youngest districts, originally called something quite different. Today it is an important commercial and industrial location, where visitors will find a business park with lots of greenery and a lake.

The history of this district began with Wolbeck Castle. Today, 9,000 people live here, who ensure a lively club life.

The southernmost district of Münster is also called "Münster's granary". There are plenty of sports facilities for the people. And the non-profit Alexianer GmbH is also based here.

Berg Fidel is the highest situated district of Münster. It is known mainly for its sports facilities for football / soccer, volleyball and skateboarding.

The largest district of Münster with over 25,000 offers numerous shopping and cultural opportunities. On the one hand, the large BASF Coatings industrial site is located here, but on the other hand, there is also a lot of nature.
