Gievenbeck

(Sources of information: Wikipedia, district portrait website City of Münster) (Sources in German)

In its history, Gievenbeck has changed a lot. Today, the district is a large residential area with a current population of over 20,000. There is a very good infrastructure for families with several daycare centers and schools, for example the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium (picture above). Open to all are a triple sports hall, the multi-functional building "La Vie" with a public library and much more.

Originally, however, Gievenbeck was only a small farming community, first officially mentioned in 889. The name probably refers to the stream that flows through the village. Its name "Goltepelsbach" or "Gievenbach" probably has Germanic origins. In the aforementioned official mention, Gievenbeck was called "villa Gibonbeki".

In the beginning the community had only about 520 inhabitants. It was not until after the Second World War that the population grew with the expansion of the university hospital. At that time, housing was created primarily for members of the university and students. For the latter, more student dormitories were built until the 1970s. Starting in the 1980s, more general housing was also created and the Gievenbeck area expanded further. As a result, this Gievenbeck has become the second largest district of Münster after Hiltrup.

You can get to know Gievenbeck better on the district website on the website of the city of Münster (website only available in German).
