Kinderhaus

(Sources of information: Wikipedia, district portrait website City of Münster) (Sources in German)

The largest district in Münster's north is currently home to around 15,000 people, mainly young families. They are particularly attracted by the wide range of schools, sports and leisure activities on offer. In addition to elementary and secondary schools as well as special schools for people with disabilities, there is a youth center, a public library, an indoor swimming pool and green recreational areas. The community center regularly offers exhibitions, concerts and theater performances (picture above: community center on the right in the district center). Interested parties can spend the night at Hotel Wasserschloss Wilkinghege, dine at the in-house restaurant and/or swing a club on the attached golf course.

Kinderhaus was founded around 1333 and at that time was still located outside the gates of Münster. The community at that time consisted of a home for lepers, a church and some farms. The home was called "de kinderen hus" (children's house), from which "Kinderhaus" (children's house) is derived. Today, this building houses the Leprosy Museum, which deals with the history of the disease from then until today.

The population in Kinderhaus grew slowly only from the beginning of the 20th century. After World War II, growth accelerated rapidly, turning the rural suburb into a heavily populated community.

If you would like to find out more about the Kinderhaus, then visit the district website on the website of the city of Münster (website only available in German).
