Coerde

(Sources of information: Wikipedia, district portrait website City of Münster) (Sources in German)

Today's townscape of Coerde has been completely planned and built by architects and town planners. However, its history goes back much further: Coerde was first mentioned in writing in the 11th century, at that time still under the name Curithi. The community at that time consisted of only one farming community and the mention referred to the main farm, today's Haus Coerde.

In the 1950s there was a shortage of living space in the village, so a new district was planned there, among other things. Military areas belonging to the British army were also converted for the construction of residential buildings and infrastructure such as daycare centers, schools and shopping facilities. Today, 10,000 people of different cultures and nationalities live in Coerde, many more than anywhere else in Münster.

In addition to housing, modern office space and commercial areas have been built on the former military sites, such as the so-called "Speicherstadt" (picture above). There you will find, for example, the Landesarchiv NRW Staatsarchiv Münster, the city archive and the central depot of the LWL-Archäologie für Westfalen.

You can find out more about Coerde on the district website on the website of the city of Münster (website only available in German).
