Hiltrup

(Sources of information: Wikipedia, district portrait website City of Münster) (Sources in German)

With its more than 25,000 inhabitants, Hiltrup is the largest district of Münster. And it has a lot to offer to them as well as to visitors: On the centrally located Marktallee, there are numerous shopping opportunities from supermarkets to clothing stores. Culturally, the offerings range from concerts and cultural events in the town hall to the spring festival in the town center to events in galleries and studios. And around Hiltrup there is a lot of nature to discover and relax in the form of the Hiltruper See and the Hohe Ward forest area (picture above: Hiltruper See).

Close to the Hiltrup train station is the large industrial site of BASF Coatings, Münster's largest industrial employer. Originally founded as Glasurit Farbenwerke, Coatings today belongs to BASF and is one of the world's leading companies in coatings production.

The name "Hiltrup" comes from the district's special location on a sand ridge that rises slightly above the surrounding countryside. "Hil" here refers to an elevation of the ground and "trup" to a village or a cluster of houses.

The first traces of settlements in Hiltrup can be traced back to the time around the birth of Christ, when Germanic tribes lived in the Münsterland. The first documented official settlement was established in 1160 with the building of the local church, and the name Hiltrup first appears in 1233. In 1848, the district was then connected to the railroad network and received its own train station in 1868.
