Wolbeck

(Sources of information: Wikipedia, district portrait website City of Münster) (Sources in German)

Today, about 9,000 residents live in Wolbeck, mainly young families. They like the district because of its location and the good child care infrastructure consisting of schools and kindergartens. There is also a wide range of clubs here, such as a carnival club and a scout club. Nature lovers can discover the forest and nature reserve "Wolbecker Tiergarten".

A special historical building is the Drostenhof, which was built in the 16th century and is now a listed building (picture above). Until 2012, the Westpreußische Landesmuseum was housed there; today, the courtyard can be booked as a backdrop for wedding ceremonies.

Wolbeck's history began with the first Wolbeck castle, which the bishop of the time had built as a sovereign in the area. It later became the residence of the bishops of Münster, but was severely damaged by French troops during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). Today, all that remains of it is an old well. For a long time, the then Wolbeck community had special rights compared to other settlements in Münster's surroundings. These included, for example, limited financial sovereignty, its own market rights and its own jurisdiction. This gave Wolbeck a certain autonomy in these areas from the sovereigns in Münster.

You can find out more about Wolbeck on the district website on the website of the city of Münster (website only available in German).
