Short portrait of Münster

(Sources of information: Wikipedia (Peace of Westphalia, Thirty Years' War, Münster [bicycle traffic, education, culture, museums, parks and green spaces, leisure], Hohe Ward, Davert) (all sources in German)

City of peace, city of bicycles, city of knowledge, city of culture, city of nature - all this is Münster.

The city worth seeing is located on the Münstersche Aa in the center of the Münsterland in the northwest of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), between the Ruhr area and the state border with Lower Saxony. Over 300,000 people live here, making Münster one of the twenty largest cities in Germany.

City of Peace

The Peace of Westphalia was made in Münster, which ended the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). This peace is considered historic because, on the one hand, it brought about peace between Catholics and Protestants who had fought each other in the war. On the other hand, it became a model for later peace conferences because it helped enforce the principle of equality between states.

Bicycle City

Münster is best known as a bicycle city because of its bicycle-friendly cityscape. The network of cycling routes is almost 500 kilometers long and runs both along roads and independent of roads. The promenade as a ring around the city center allows cyclists to reach different areas quickly. There is also the "Radstation Münster" bicycle parking garage at the main train station with its own bicycle washing facility. So it's no wonder that of all trips in the city, about 40 percent, are made by bicycle - the highest bicycle mode share for large cities in all of Germany. Münster's bicycle-friendliness is therefore also known internationally: city planners from other countries often come here to learn how to make their cities more bicycle-friendly.

City of Knowledge

With over 65,000 students (as of 2018), Münster is one of the ten largest university cities in Germany. However, this is not particularly surprising, because several universities can be found here. These include the Westphalian Willhelms University of Münster, the University of Applied Sciences, the German Police University, the Münster Academy of Art and Music, the Federal University of Public Administration and many more.

City of Culture

Culturally Münster has a lot to offer. There are many theaters such as the Theater Münster and the Wolfgang Borchert Theater. Museum fans also have a wide choice between the City Museum, the Picasso Museum, the LWL Museum of Art and Culture and many others. In addition, there are various events such as the Send, the city festival Münster Mittendrin, the harbor festival and the sculpture projects.

Nature City

In and around Münster there are several parks and green areas. The most famous is the promenade around the old town, nearby is the Botanical Garden at the castle. In the districts there are also numerous forest and nature areas such as the Wolbecker Tiergarten, the Rieselfelder, the Hohe Ward, the Davert and more.

All this is Münster. And much more.
