Gelmer

Gelmer is a small district in the northeast of Münster and is located in the immediate vicinity of the Dortmund-Ems Canal and the River Werse. That is why there are two harbors here. The former oil harbor is now a commercial area, and there is a marina for hobby sailors.

Nearby is the well-known Münster-Gelmer Kanalüberführung (English: canal overpass), or KÜ for short, which once connected Münster with North Sea ports for economic trade (picture above). It was built from 1894 to 1896, but was replaced by a new overpass after World War II. Today it is mostly drained and an industrial monument. However, part of it still carries water and is therefore a popular destination for lovers of recreational swimming. Away from the water, asparagus is grown in Gelmer and can be bought directly from the farmers in May and June.

Gelmer includes the districts of Mariendorf and Sudmühle, which consist mainly of housing estates. Sudmühle in particular is a real insider tip for nature and horse lovers. The Wersepark Sudmühle with its outdoor swimming pool and recreation area invites you to enjoy the peace and quiet. At the Westfälisches Pferdezentrum (Westphalian Horse Center), on the other hand, everything revolves around horses, from breeding and training to aptitude tests.

You can find out more about this district on the Gelmer district website on the website of the city of Münster (website only available in German).
