Amelsbüren

(Sources of information: Wikipedia, district portrait website City of Münster) (Sources in German)

The southernmost district of Münster is also the city's largest in terms of area. This is due to the wooded areas such as Hohe Ward and the many farming communities, through which Amelsbüren is still strongly agricultural. This earned the community the nickname "Münster's granary". The residents have a lot of sporting activities to choose from: From judo and table tennis to swimming, soccer and tennis to fitness and gymnastics, everything is here.

Also worth mentioning is the Alexianer GmbH, a non-profit group of companies for health and social services (picture above: Alexianer Clinic). It has its headquarters in Amelsbüren and operates a specialist clinic for psychiatry and psychotherapy there, to which the Kunsthaus Kannen belongs. It shows outsider art and is a unique meeting place in Germany for disabled and non-disabled artists.

Amelsbüren was first mentioned in a document in 1137 as "Amuluncburen". This name is said to go back to a man named Amulung, who built his dwelling (bur) in the area of the present district. The first actual settlers probably settled here in the 12th century and built farms. Over the centuries, hardly any people were added, so that Amelsbüren had village character for a long time. Only after the Second World War did the community develop into a place of residence for more people. Today, more than 6,000 people live there.

You can get to know Amelsbüren better on the district website on the website of the city of Münster (website only available in German).
