Albachten

According to a legend, the name "Albachten" comes from Bishop Liudger (742-809), who is said to have found all the inhabitants drunk during a visit to the community. When he then left, he is said to have said about the people that they were "all bacchants". With this he referred to Bacchus, the ancient Roman god of wine and drunkenness. This is said to be the origin of the name "Albachten".

In fact, Albachten was first mentioned in a document from 1142. Until the Second World War, the community was completely agricultural and had fewer than a thousand inhabitants (picture above: example farm). Only after the end of the war did it develop into a modern village that attracted more and more people. Its appearance changed accordingly: streets were widened, old houses were torn down and new ones built, and new construction areas were opened up for housing. Today, more than 6,000 people live in Albachten and are organized in numerous clubs. These are primarily musical associations such as marching bands and brass groups, but also the "Haus der Begegnung" (house of encounter) as a cultural and event center.

Further information on Albachten can be found on the district website on the website of the city of Münster (website only available in German).
