Berg Fidel

(Sources of information: Wikipedia, district portrait website City of Münster) (Sources in German)

This district with its more than 5,500 inhabitants is the highest inhabited area of the city. At the highest point (70.9 meters) is the so-called "White Giant", a 17-story residential complex, which can be seen very well even from some distance (picture above: part of the "White Giant" in the background).

However, Berg Fidel is best known for its sports facilities, as they are the largest in Münster: the Preußenstadion, the large sports hall or "Volleydrom" and the skate park. The Preußenstadion is home to the local soccer club Preußen Münster, while the "Volleydrom" is home to the German Women's Volleyball League team USC Münster. The skater park is open to all skating enthusiasts. The "Bergfest" is held there every year with international pro skaters and music acts.

Berg Fidel was designed and built directly as a housing estate in the 1960s. However, the area was already settled around 1000 BC. The name  may also date from that time, as it could refer to the elevated location ("Berg" meaning "mountain"). And "fidel" meant something like "safe", so that "Berg Fidel" was the "safe mountain". "Fidel", however, can also come from "fidelis" (Latin "faithful, reliable"): There is a theory that representatives of the city used to swear allegiance to the sovereigns on the site.

There is more about Berg Fidel on the district website on the website of the city of Münster (website only available in German).
