Gremmendorf

Gremmendorf is one of Münster's youngest districts and probably only came into being around 200 years ago. It could not be found on maps from the time before that. Originally, it was a small settlement around the Gremme farm in the farming community of Delstrup.

In 1903 Delstrup was incorporated into the urban area and the Westphalian State Railroad started a stop there, which was called "Gremmendorf". Over time, this name replaced "Delstrup" as a place name and Gremmendorf changed in the same way. The area was made a barracks location and housing was created for the soldiers and their families. This provided a strong population boost. And when British occupation troops and their families joined after the Second World War, houses were built for them as well. The troops left in 2012.

Today, Gremmendorf is a major commercial and industrial location with more than 11,000 residents. Central is the large Loddenheide industrial park, where the freely accessible Friedenspark is located. There is plenty of greenery there, as well as a large playground and a lake, which are popular with families and walkers (picture above: lake). In the park there is a Peace Chapel, where concerts are held regularly and which is also rented for private and business events.

You can find out more about Gremmendorf on the district website on the website of the city of Münster (website only available in German).

Information about the Friedenspark can be found on this webseite at Münster Sights.
