Hohe Ward

(Sources of information: Wikipedia [Hohe Ward, Hiltruper See, Lehrpfad]) (Sources in German)

The Hohe Ward is a wooded area between Münster's district of Hiltrup and the neighboring towns of Albersloh and Rinkerode.

On the one hand, the area has been used since 1906 by the Stadtwerke Münster for drinking water production. On the other hand, it is also a local recreation area for all those who want to relax here. For this purpose, a network of hiking and horse riding trails has been created. If you want to learn more about the Hohe Ward on site, you can do so via the "Naturlehrpfad Hohe Ward". This nature trail gives you an understanding of the area on 15 information boards and leads to Haus Heidhorn, the headquarters of the NABU Nature Conservation Station Münsterland.

The forest area is owned as a forestry by the city of Münster, the Stadtwerke and the Heidhorn Foundation. Predominantly pine and deciduous trees grow here. The pine stands were largely destroyed by hurricane Kyrill in 2007. However, this catastrophe also had its good side, because it meant that the conversion of the forest stands into more varied mixed deciduous forests could and can be advanced more quickly.

The Hohe Ward is also located in the immediate vicinity of a large gravel-sand area. It was formed ages ago from a groove formed by glacial runoff water. Later, sand and gravel came there with the meltwater and filled up the groove. As a result, the area was significantly elevated compared to the surrounding countryside. The sand was mined in the past, which, among other things, created the Hiltrup Lake.

This and further information on the Hohe Ward can be found in the Wikipedia article about the Hohe Ward. Information on the NABU Nature Conservation Station Münsterland and its work can be found on its website (both websites only available in German).
