Hiltrup Lake

(Sources of information: Wikipedia [Hiltruper See, Hohe Ward]) (Sources in German)

Lake Hiltrup is a lake created by sand mining near the district of Hiltrup in the south of Münster. It borders the forest area Hohe Ward to the south and east and the Dortmund-Ems canal to the north.

With its surroundings, the lake is a popular recreational area of Münster. There are numerous horse riding and hiking trails that connect it with the Hohe Ward. These include the nature trail "Naturlehrpfad Hohe Ward", which introduces the area in more detail along stations with information. On the northern and northwestern shores you can find an outdoor swimming pool, the facilities of a sailing club, a tennis court and a hotel.

The creation of the lake began in 1913/14 with the extraction of sand in the area, which is part of a large gravel sand area. The sand was needed mainly for the construction of railroad lines and was extracted from the lake until 1967. Then mining was stopped because of the importance of the area for drinking water extraction for Münster. Since then, the entire gravel sand area has been a water protection area and bathing is therefore prohibited at Lake Hiltrup.

From 1920 onwards, Lake Hiltrup was first leased by the Dortmund factory owner Steiner, who ran a trout farm until the mid-1920s. Because of him, the lake is also called "Steiner Lake".
