Schloss Münster

The Schloss Münster or "Fürstbischöfliches Schloss" (Prince Bishop's Palace) is a Baroque residential palace for Münster's prince bishops on the edge of the inner city. It was built from 1767 to 1787 by architect Johann Conrad Schlaun from light Baumberg sandstone. Today it is an administrative and lecture building of the University of Münster, which also uses it stylized as its logo.

Although the castle was intended to be the seat of the local prince-bishops, they were unable or unwilling to use it. Thus, it remained unused and, after the dissolution of the Prince-Bishopric of Münster in the early 19th century, became the seat of the administration and military leadership of the Province of Westphalia.

During the National Socialist era, the castle was the residence of the local Gauleiter and the official seat of the Staatshochbauamt. It was severely damaged during the Second World War and was to be demolished after the war. However, this was abandoned due to resistance and instead plans were approved to use the castle for the University of Münster. It then became the official seat of the university in 1954.

Special events are held every year on the "Schlossplatz" (castle square) in front of the castle. The most famous is the folk festival "Send", which takes place three times a year for two weeks (picture below). At the Send, you can experience rides such as carousels and roller coasters and enjoy treats like popcorn and cotton candy. On Friday night, fireworks are set off and last for several minutes. Another event is the "Turnier der Sieger", which also takes place every summer. This is a top-class horse show, which is held by the Westphalian Riding Club. On the castle square you can see the show jumping and dressage competitors of the tournament.
