Werse

(Sources of information: Wikipedia [Werse, Münster – Leisure] (Sources in German)

The Werse is a tributary of the Ems in Münsterland. It originates in Beckum in the county of Warendorf and flows through several towns in the region until it joins the Ems at Münster. In Münster, it flows east past the city center and through the districts of Handorf and Gelmer.

You have several possibilities to relax and / or have fun at and on the Werse. On the one hand, you can walk or hike along the river. If you rather want to cycle there, use the Werseradweg. It starts in Rheda-Wiedenbrück and runs along the river and through the surrounding countryside. It ends at the confluence of the Werse and the Ems near the Gelmer district of Münster.

You can swim in the Werse or rent canoes and other boats to cruise the river (picture below). There are several boat rentals along the watercourse, and professional canoeing clubs also sit along the Werse. In addition to nature, you can also discover numerous water mills along the course of the river, such as the Pleistermühle and the Wersemühle.

If you are more of a fishing fan, then you can also pursue your hobby on the Werse. The river is a popular fishing water and is home to numerous fish such as eels, river trout, perch, pike, catfish, pikeperch and so on. It is no wonder, then, that the Werse is a center of attraction for angling and fishing clubs from all over Münsterland.

The river name "Werse" probably has a Germanic origin. It has been documented since 1189, after which there were various variations of the name, such as "de Wersa" from 1279 or the Latin name "molendion dicto Wersa". The latter referred to mill sites or water mills on the Werse. "to Werze" and "up der Werse" were Low German terms in the 15th century.

All information about the Werse and more can be found in the Wikipedia article about the river (English article). Information and links about canoeing on the Werse can be found on the website of the Touristische Arbeitsgemeinschaft Parklandschaft Kreis Warendorf (website only available in German).
