Theater Münster

(Sources of information: The theater's website [About the theater, offers related to the program]) (Sources in German)

The Theater Münster sees itself as the city's largest and most traditional cultural institution and offers you a diverse program: musical theater (opera, operetta, musical), drama, dance theater, concerts (symphony, children's, choir, cinema concerts) and young theater. In these five divisions, there are around 30 premieres and 600 performances each season, which are staged in the theater's three venues. So you can expect a broad program ranging from classics to completely new plays.

In addition to the performances, the theater offers you more. For example, selected productions are presented to you before the premiere and individual scenes are shown. For other plays and symphony concerts, the dramaturges will also explain the background to the creation, authors or composers and show you the special features of the production. For other performances, you will have the opportunity to attend a public rehearsal before the premiere, where the respective work will also be presented. Following selected performances or upon request, additional talks and discussions between you and the rest of the audience with the director and / or the artists can take place.

The Theater Münster in its present form has only existed since the 1950s, but it has roots dating back to 1774. At that time, the first theater building in Münster was constructed in an old slaughterhouse. In 1890, the house was demolished and the theater moved to its current location on the Neubrückenstraße, at that time a former nobleman's residence. This was destroyed during the Second World War and the city decided to build a new building. This was then opened under the name "Städtische Bühnen Münster" in 1956, the first post-war construction of a theater in all of Germany. Initially, there was only the "Großes Haus" as a venue, in 1971 the "Kleines Haus" was added and "U2" in the basement in recent years. In 2013, the theater was then renamed from "Städtische Bühnen Münster" to "Theater Münster".

More information about the theater, the play program and other offers can be found on the website of the theater (website only available in German).
