City Museum of Münster

(Sources of information: Wikipedia, Museum website [The Museum, Learning / Events]) (Sources in German)

The City Museum of Münster is located on the edge of the inner city near the Promenade and deals with the history of Münster from its beginnings to the present day. It is one of the major city history museums in Germany and is the most visited museum in the city.

The permanent display collection on the first and second floors of the museum shows you Münster's history from the founding of the city to the present day. The development of the city is illustrated, among other things, with city and building models. In addition to the collection, you can visit special exhibitions on current topics and aspects of Münster's art and cultural history and focus exhibitions. You can also explore the collection and exhibitions on guided tours. Guided tours and visits are also offered for the Zwinger at the Promenade, which the museum operates as a branch. Depending on the guided tours offered for both the museum and the Zwinger, you may need to book in advance, and admission is charged for all.

There are also offers for children. On the occasion of birthdays, they can paint with finger paints, write in a writing workshop as in the Middle Ages, go on a treasure hunt and much more. School classes can take guided tours on the history of Münster, the Anabaptist dominion, the Thirty Years' War and Peace of Westphalia, and other topics. In creative courses, children can also model the Westphalian Peace Medal and print their own graphics on the subject of the Anabaptists.

The City Museum was founded in 1979 and was initially located in the Gerling Villa in the Windthorststraße at the Promenade. It opened at the end of August 1982 with an exhibition on the Anabaptists. Over time, however, the Gerling Villa became too small, so the museum moved to a vacant department store in the Salzstraße, the current location of the museum. There the museum foyer also houses numerous stores to this day.
