Promenade

(Sources of information: Wikipedia and City of Münster) (Sources in German)

The Promenade is the "green ring" or "green belt" in the center of Münster that goes around the city center. It is completely car-free and thus open to everyone on foot or by bike. Cyclists in particular make heavy use of the promenade: 1,200 of them have already been counted per hour.

Originally, the Promenade was a fortification ring built in the early 13th century. Over time, the complex had to be adapted again and again to meet the demands of new weapons of war. After the Seven Years' War (1756-1763), people began to dismantle it. For the space thus freed up, the master builder and architect Johann Conrad Schlaun had plans to erect an avenue. For this purpose, the last fortifications were removed and the water ditch, which still existed at that time, was filled in.

Today the Promenade is one of the most famous sights of the city. If you dare to take the complete route, you will be guided once through Münster and get to see a lot. And this does not only mean the different parts of the city, but also green areas and other sights like the Buddenturm and the Zwinger. For animals, the Promenade is an inner-city biotope, especially for endangered bat species.

Events also take place on the Promenade. For example, a large flea market takes place between May and September, where private and professional sellers and vendors offer you their goods. If you like to compete with your bike, the 24-hour race on the promenade is something for you. It has been held every year since 2007 on the first weekend of summer.
