The Art Museum Pablo Picasso (officially "Kunstmuseum Pablo Picasso") is located in the city center at the Picassoplatz in the Königsstraße (picture square below). It was opened in 2000 and is the first and so far the only Picasso museum in Germany.
You can see over 800 prints by the Spanish artist in the museum, including almost all of his lithographic works. But it's not just Picasso here: works by artist friends and contemporaries such as Georges Braque, Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall are also presented. The works of all these artists have been collected by the museum through purchases as well as loans from other museums and collectors such as the couple Gert and Jutta Guizinga. The works are presented in changing exhibitions and are thus not on permanent display.
In addition to the exhibitions, the museum can also be rented as a venue for conferences, workshops or celebrations.
The idea for the art museum goes back to the couple Guizinga. They wanted to make their Picasso collection accessible to the general public and therefore founded the Sparkassenstiftung Pablo Picasso in 1997 together with the Westphalian-Lippe savings banks and the Westdeutsche Landesbank. The goal of the foundation was to build a museum that would give its visitors an insight into Picasso's life, his work and, above all, his lithographic work.
The Stadtsparkasse Münster provided two buildings as exhibition space, which were connected for the museum's purpose. The first is the Druffel'sche Hof, an early nobleman's residence with a façade of sandstone (picture above). The second building is the Hensenbau right next door. The two buildings, each with two floors, add up to over 600 square meters of exhibition space. Visitors can enter the exhibition space via the staircase of the Druffel'schen Hof on the one hand and via the MünsterArkaden on the other hand, which are located at the back of the building.
You can find information on opening hours, admission prices, exhibitions, guided tours and much more on the museum's website (website only available in German).
