The Mühlenhof-Freilichtmuseum is an open-air museum that shows rural and handicraft culture from the Münsterland and Emsland regions from the last 400 years. Here you can get an impression of living habits and working methods of the people of that time with the help of 30 historical buildings. The museum is located near the Aasee and thus in the immediate vicinity of the Allwetterzoo and the LWL-Museum of Natural History.
Guided tours of the museum grounds are offered for adult groups as well as school and daycare groups, during which they learn about the history of the Mühlenhof and its buildings. In addition, regular events include demonstrations of old crafts and readings in Low and High German. During the Advent season, a Christmas market is held on the farm grounds with sales and bar stalls and a carrousel. During this time, many buildings are illuminated. Admission prices for these and other activities vary.
School classes can also discover, for example, how school was run "in Great-Grandma's time" at the turn of the 19th/20th centuries (picture of classroom below). Childcare groups can get to know the Mühlenhof animals. In addition, they can take guided tours on topics such as "Food in Great-Grandma's Time" and "Life in a Farmhouse", exploring the living conditions of that time. Different admission prices also apply to these offers.
All visitors can have a snack in the day café "Dorfkrug", which offers daily changing dishes and fresh cakes from its own bakery. You can book the café for breakfast and brunch, simply by phone or contact form. The "Dorfkrug" and other buildings of the Mühlenhof can also be booked for events such as company outings, corporate meetings, family celebrations, birthdays and weddings.
The Mühlenhof-Freilichtmuseum was opened in 1961, at the same time a windmill from the 18th century from the Emsland region was rebuilt. Over time, main farm buildings and outbuildings, an old country school, a village store, a bee house, a village forge and other old buildings were then restored.
