Ruschhaus house

(Sources of information: Wikipedia, Burg Hülshoff website about the Rüschhaus [Annette von Droste zu Hülshoff Foundation]) (Sources in German)

The Haus Rüschhaus is a country estate in the district of Nienberge in Münster with a beautiful, geometrically laid out baroque garden and surrounded by a small water ditch. Both the architect Johann Conrad Schlaun and the well-known Münster writer and poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff lived here.

In 1743, Schlaun bought the estate from the then owners and developed it into a country residence, which he used during the summer months. He had the idea for the baroque garden complex, but it was not realized until 1983. In 1825, Baron Clemens-August II von Droste zu Hülshoff, the father of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, acquired the country house. After his death a year later, she moved in with her mother and sister and lived in the house until 1846. During this time, she wrote, among other things, her best-known work, "Die Judenbuche" (English: The Jew's Beech).

The von Droste zu Hülshoff family lived in the manor until the beginning of the 20th century, after which they rented it out. However, admirers of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff still had the opportunity to visit her former home. During the Second World War, the house was damaged, but the damage was quickly repaired after the war. Then in 1949, the von Droste zu Hülshoff family opened the house as a museum and leased it out. The family sold the estate to the city of Münster in 1979, which left it to the Annette von Droste zu Hülshoff Stiftung (foundation) in 2013.

You can visit the estate and take part in guided tours of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff's living quarters. In addition, Haus Rüschhaus offers you a varied program of exhibitions as well as projects by artists.
