Buddenturm

(Sources of information: Wikipedia, Filmlocations Münster) (Sources in German)

The Buddenturm, also called the Pulverturm, is the oldest surviving part of the former city fortification of Münster. It is located on the promenade near the so-called Kreuzschanze, which was also part of the fortification and later turned into a park.

The tower was built around 1150 as a defense tower. In 1533 it also served as a prison and from 1598 as a powder tower. It still fulfilled this function when the town fortification was demolished between 1764 and 1767. A part of the old fortification can still be seen on the west side. The tower is enclosed in a steel structure installed on the occasion of the 1987 Sculpture Projects.

From 1771, the Buddenturm next to the Zwinger was again used as a prison, before the city bought it from the military in 1879 and used it as a water tower. After the Second World War, it had to be restored and served as a storage facility until 1992, as well as a switching point for street lighting.

If you are a film maker or filmmaker, you can use the Buddenturm as a backdrop by arrangement. You can find the information on the website of the Filmservice Münster.Land (website only available in German).

More about the Skulptur Projekte you can read on this website at Münster Sights.
