The Botanical Garden is located behind the Schloss Münster and is operated and financed by the University of Münster. It has a total area of about 5 hectares, on which there are 10 greenhouses. There are nearly 8,000 plant species to see here, including geographic plant collections from around the world, plant collections ranging from spore plants to carnivorous plants to moss ferns and educational collections such as medicinal plants as well as an olfactory and tactile garden.
Although the garden is used by the university as a research facility, you can still visit it, admission is free. You can also participate in public tours and workshops, depending on the event advance registration is required.
Founded in 1803 at the university's medical faculty, the garden was designed as a teaching and research facility. Over the following decades, greenhouses were built for local plants as well as buildings such as the orangery and the tropical house for foreign exotic plants.
During the Second World War, the garden was severely damaged by air raids and most of the plants perished. After the war, reconstruction proceeded quickly and the garden was fully rebuilt in the post-war period. Later, other innovations were added, such as a pavilion as a visitor center, a wild meadow and a garden for medicinal plants.
Everything you need to know about the Botanical Garden can be found on the University's website about the garden. Information around events, registration and prices can be found on this website (websites available in English, but certain information may be only available in German).
